Our Story

The Story of Homestyle Foods

Thank You for visiting our page. The story of  Homestyle Foods runs way back to 1969. In a small town in upstate New York my parents purchased a pizza place called Homestyle Pizza, At 12 years old I received my indoctrination into the food business, I learned from the maestro “Augie” also known as “Daddy” how to treat customers and run a restaurant.

A Little History

In 1974 my parents opened a deli in Rotterdam NY. That endeavor was followed by the purchase of land and the gasoline station next door in 1981.  Mom was gone but Daddy kept up his entrepreneurial spirit. Our business flourished and the summer of 2004 saw the close of an extremely successful business.

Our new adventure led us to North Carolina and the proud ownership of Augies Old Point Golf and Country Club in Hampstead NC. Augie retired and I ran the club. The new business was very welcoming at first. Many improvements were made. Towards the end of the decade the combination of a Jumbo Note and the National mortgage crisis sealed our fate.

In the fall of 2010 I purchased a bakery in Porters Neck NC and opened up Hungry Heroes Pizza and Subs. Augie would come and visit daily and just enjoy his time at the store. Crystal Cote was hired and through her hard work and dedication to her job the business was successful. Hungry Heroes survived the widening of  Market St while the construction of Walmart was being completed. Augie passed away and the desire to continue faded. Hungry Heroes was sold and became the Cast Iron Skillet.

The Move to Shallotte

In the early spring of 2015 my interest in Brunswick County brought an attempt to get back in business I found a butcher shop and deli on Highway 17 that sparked my interest. The thought of traveling an hour back and forth throttled my interest, But there was this diner on Main St in Shallotte. I purchased the diner in May of 2015.

It’s the People that Make Things Work

When you’re in business you hope for lucky breaks, My first lucky break was hiring Theresa Ring. Her knowledge and work ethic were second to none. My second and most important break was that the Emily and Ava show came to town. Emily is my daughter and her sidekick Ava is my granddaughter. Theresa had some physical ailments which forced her to cease working. Hurricane Florence was the jump off point. Luck and a little bit of help from above brought Denise Robinson. After Denise started my girl Crystal from Porters Neck came knocking on the door. She brought her sister Rachael and boyfriend Craig. The slogan “Quality Food and Service” was born. Homestyle Foods is a vibrant restaurant operated by friends and family!!!

That is our story…that is why our business is continuing to grow.

You see it’s the PEOPLE THAT MAKE THINGS WORK.

The people that support us and the people the serve them….Me? I just drive the bus! Visit us where dining is a pleasure,
